In the book Life After Theft by Aprilynne Pike, the author uses foreshadowing to hint us of future events that are to occur. In the beginning of the book, a character, Kimberlee, is described as a dead ghost no one can see. When she was alive she was the queen bee, the rich girl, the pretty popular one, but she had one secret. Kimberlee stole everything important to anyone at her school. The reason Kimberlee is a ghost and cannot move onto the afterlife is because of her stealing habits, she cannot move on due to unfinished business on Earth.
Then we are introduced to Jeff, the new kid who just moved to California. On his first day, he sees Kimberlee but he has no clue she is dead, a ghost, he has no idea who she is, so when he first sees her and says hello, you can imagine Kimberlee is shocked since no one has been able to see her since her death. The author uses foreshadowing in this book by telling us about characters pasts and warning us of future events yet to come. She tells us information about characters that the other characters in the book are not aware of, this is also known as dramatic irony, which Pike uses many times in this book!
